Mining, pirquineros and crisis in a locality of the Norte Chico: the Cogotí valley during the second half of the XIX century. Notes for its study

This paper seeks to give a preliminary approximation of the state of mining workers and their production in the Cogotí valley towards the end of the 19th century. Through this, it is possible to show that there are two important variables that condition part of the mining production crisis. In the first place, the poor living conditions of the workers, as well as those of the local landowning elites. In addition to this, connectivity problems, the lack of smelting facilities and the distance to export centers made it difficult, in the face of a global mining crisis, to invest in better extraction conditions, leaving mining production in the area to the fate of the workers.
